Thank you to all our blood donors who opted in to assist the Lucky Lucy Foundation during July and August as part of our Extra Drop initiative. The Extra Drop allows you, the donor, to give back in a unique way by opting in to support a worthy cause. Thanks to you, the Lucky Lucy Foundation, received much-needed funds which allows them to continue to do the amazing work they do.
The Lucky Lucy Foundation is a pro-life animal rescue organisation, established in 2010. They provide hope to severely neglected and abused domestic animals.
Over the two-months 1766 blood donors opted in to support the foundation and raised R26 490. We were excited to hand over the cheque to Richard Green, chairperson and volunteer at the charity, who expressed heartfelt gratitude. “On behalf of the Lucky Lucy Foundation, we extend our deepest gratitude to the Western Cape Blood Service for this remarkable contribution. Receiving the generous amount of R26,490 through the Extra Drop initiative is not only an incredible support to our work but also a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion. It is truly a privilege to be part of such an inspiring initiative that brings people together in the spirit of giving — not only of blood, but of hope, kindness and the resources that make lasting change possible. This funding will allow us to continue providing care, comfort and second chances to the vulnerable animals who rely on us, and for that, we are sincerely thankful.” You can continue to support them by becoming a guardian angel. Our new beneficiary for September and October is The South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR), a non-profit and Public Benefit Organisation dedicated to providing life-saving bone marrow transplants for patients in need. They work tirelessly to facilitate matches between donors and recipients, offering hope and a second chance at life.
For 30% of patients, hope comes from within their own family- a sibling or relative whose marrow is a match. But for the other 70%, their lifeline depends on a stranger, someone out there who might say, “Yes, I can help.”
SABMR was started in 1991 to bridge the gap for patients whose family members are not a match. The registry doesn’t just search locally, it searches worldwide, partnering with international registries giving them access to millions of potential donors globally. For more information about the wonderful work they do, visit SABMR.
We, at WCBS, are proud, not only to save lives through blood donation but also to make a significant impact on the communities we serve. The Extra Drop initiative is allowing us, with your help, to do just that. The programme supports a different charity every two months with a focus on organisations in the Western Cape that are committed to improving healthcare, education, poverty alleviation, youth development, early childhood development and animal welfare.
