After careful consideration, WCBS Transfusion Virology Laboratory will implement an immunochromatographic assay for HIV-1/2, HCV and HBsAg confirmatory testing. The immunochromatographic assay is widely regarded as the new gold standard for HIV antibody testing, and provides confirmation and differentiation of individual HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies.
Other benefits of the new assay and equipment include the ability to archive images on the test cassette, which could be useful for look-back investigations; faster turnaround and setup times, allowing urgent samples to be processed as required; reduced need for outsourcing testing; cost efficiencies; and a smaller footprint.
