Cape Town, 19 January 2026 – The start of a new year is the perfect time to form habits that make a real difference. That’s why the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is encouraging all current donors, potential donors, and those who haven’t donated in a year or more (known as lapsed donors) to begin 2026 with purpose by making blood donation part of their New Year’s resolution.
Every year, thousands of patients across the province rely on donated blood. Whether it’s for surgery, cancer treatment, childbirth, or trauma care, the need is constant and the demand for new donors is growing.
To inspire long-term commitment, WCBS has launched its 2026 Commitment Campaign as part of this month’s theme, “Share the Gift of Life.” The campaign encourages both new and existing donors to make blood donation a regular habit, rather than a once-off act.
“Starting the year with a commitment to donate blood is more than a resolution it’s a promise to save lives, not just once, but all year long,” says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. “A single donation takes just 30 minutes, but regular donors help ensure that blood is always available when patients need it most.”
As part of the campaign, donors who commit to giving blood at least four times in 2026 will receive a limited-edition WCBS coffee plunger and mug as a token of appreciation.
