February is often associated with love, with flowers and gifts, and all the little things we celebrate. But love is also shown in the everyday choices we make to care for others. One meaningful way for couples to do this is to donate blood together. When couples donate side by side, they support each other while making a difference in people’s lives. Here’s a story of Lindelwa and Kwazi Khuzwayo on their journey of love, ubuntu and saving lives as told by them.

Our journey as blood donors began long before marriage, back in our high school years, when we first learned the importance of giving back and caring for others. Donating blood became a big part of who we were, individually and together as a couple.

When we relocated to the Western Cape in 2022, settling into a new province meant adjusting to new routines. Although we regularly noticed blood donation pop-ups and billboards, many clinics were either too far from home or scheduled during office hours, making it difficult to donate consistently.

That changed in 2024 when we discovered a blood donation clinic at Somerset Mall. The convenience made all the difference. It was also our introduction to the Western Cape Blood Service, and while we were new donors on this side, the welcoming experience immediately made us feel at home.

Between the two of us, we have donated 12 units of blood, and will soon be 14 after our next donation. But for us, giving blood is about far more than numbers. It is an act of caring for our fellow human beings, a true expression of ubuntu. We donate together because we enjoy being together, and because we understand how something so simple on our part can help save and change lives. Honestly, there’s something special about turning a good deed into a shared date.

Today, we bring our 7-year-old son when we donate. We want him to see, from a young age, the importance of helping others wherever possible. We hope that one day, when he is old enough, he too will become a blood donor and carry forward this legacy of giving.

Giving Blood, Giving Love: A Couple’s Journey of Ubuntu

Donating together has become more than an act of kindness for us. It reflects our commitment to one another, a promise to walk through life hand-in-hand, serving others along the way.

Having a blood donation clinic conveniently located at the mall has been a game-changer. The extended operating hours allow us to donate at a time that suits our schedule, and the reminders we receive make it easy to stay consistent. The staff are always friendly, professional, and reassuring, answering questions with care and making every visit a positive experience.

We would wholeheartedly encourage every couple to visit their local blood donation clinic and donate together. It is a simple act, shared in love, that has the power to change lives, including your own.
